Pre-cooked meals recalled over potential listeria risk

Amidst the deadly Listeria outbreak, which claimed four lives and at least 20 reported cases of infection, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled more pre-cooked and frozen meals from the market over potential contamination.

On Wednesday (Oct 1), a company voluntarily recalled its frozen meal due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall was initiated as it contained a recalled pasta ingredient.

The same day, another Idaho-based company recalled selected store-made deli items as it had recalled a pasta ingredient linked to listeria contamination. Multiple items under different brand names were recalled.

Here’s everything you need to know about the recent recalls linked to listeria contamination.

What are the recalled products? Demers Food Group has voluntarily recalled select Scott & Jon's Shrimp Scampi with Linguini. The product was distributed across the nation to wholesale distributors and operators between Sept. 15 and Sept. 25.

Albertsons Companies has also recalled multiple store-made deli items, supplied by Fresh Creative Foods. The recalled items were sold in multiple stores across the country.

Why are the products recalled? Scott & Jon's Shrimp Scampi with Linguini, popular frozen meals, were recalled as the products contain a recalled linguini pasta ingredient supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods, which was recalled for Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Similarly, the Albertsons Companies' store-made deli items were recalled as they contain a recalled bowtie pasta ingredient manufactured by Nate’s Fine Foods of Roseville, CA.

If you think you may have the recalled items in your refrigerator, look at the labels for the product name, lot code, best by date, and UPC. Check if it matches the ones mentioned below.

What to do if you have the recalled product?Consuming food contaminated with Listeria can cause listeriosis, a serious infection. Certain groups, such as older adults, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and their newborns, are more vulnerable to the infection.
So if you may have purchased these items, do not consume. You can dispose of them or return the items to the local store for a full refund. “In these cases that anyone who purchased or received any recalled products to use extra vigilance in cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces and containers that may have come in contact with these products to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Listeria monocytogenes can survive in refrigerated temperatures and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces,” the FDA cautioned.
