'My plate is free from tears': Tweet by 'proud vegetarian' stirs online debate on food choices

A recent post on X (formerly Twitter) by food blogger Nalini Unagar has sparked a fiery online debate between vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

Unagar, who proudly advocates for a vegetarian lifestyle, shared a photo of her plate filled with rice and dal, wrote the caption: "I'm proud to be a vegetarian. My plate is free from tears, cruelty , and guilt."

The post quickly went viral, garnering over 3.7 million views and sparking widespread reactions, ranging from support to harsh criticism.

Unagar has posted similar images of her meals in the past, using the same caption, which some users found provocative. This latest post, however, touched a nerve, with many accusing her of being insensitive and judgmental about others' food choices .

The debate quickly shot up, with users flooding the comments to express their disagreement, accusing Unagar of moral policing and passing judgment on non-vegetarians.

One user responded, "I don't understand why it has to be about cruelty, etc. Everyone has their own preference. Would you ask a carnivore animal to be vegetarian? Nature has created all of us in a certain way, let's respect that and move on with life. We are built to consume plants and meat both... plants are also living things."

Unagar responded sharply, arguing, "Plants don't go through child labor pain; animals do. Plants don't suffer from pain; animals suffer. Plants don't have brains; animals do."

Another user took offense at her statement, commenting, "What's proud of that??? Keep your thoughts and ideology with you, no issues. Don't tell the other side is cruel. Your mentality is more cruel than what's on a non-vegetarian plate. Better change your mind or change your posts... Coexistence is the ultimate goal in a social community ."

In response, Unagar wrote in Hindi, "MY SIDE IS CRUEL TOO. The calf did not drink its mother's milk today because we want to eat ice cream. The calf will go to bed hungry today because we have to eat ice cream. The calf's mother will have to undergo artificial insemination again today because we have to eat ice cream. The male calf will be slaughtered today because it cannot give milk."

As the debate intensified, some non-vegetarian users posted photos of their own meals in defiance. One user shared a picture of beef curry, writing, "I'm proud to eat beef, my favorite curry."
