Elon Musk , the founder of SpaceX , has issued a stark warning about the eventual destruction of all life on Earth by the expanding sun, asserting that establishing a self-sustaining civilisation on Mars is the only viable long-term survival strategy for humanity.
In a clip making rounds on the social media platform X, Musk was talking about benefits of colonising Mars, emphasising the urgency of making life "multi-planetary," stating that this endeavour is not merely about temporary visits to Mars but about creating a permanent, independent foothold for humanity.
“Musk: And eventually, all life on Earth will be destroyed by the sun. It's gradually expanding, we do at some point have to be multi-planetary civilization because Earth will be incinerated…” the video caption said.
He described Mars colonization as "life insurance for life collectively," ensuring the continuation of civilization beyond Earth's eventual demise.
Musk urges for immediate action
While acknowledging that the solar apocalypse is still hundreds of millions of years away, Musk argued for immediate action, stressing that humanity must capitalise on its current strength and resources.
“If Earth has been around for four and a half billion years... then Earth only has about 10% more life in it before it gets so hot that life is impossible,” he warned.
He further emphasised the critical juncture when Mars achieves self-sufficiency, stating, “The key point in the future where destiny of life as we know it will forever be affected is when Mars becomes self-sustaining... If the resupply ships from Earth stop coming for any reason... then we have not created life insurance.”
According to a report by The New York Times, Musk, 53, has accelerated SpaceX's efforts towards Martian colonisation. The company is now developing concrete plans for dome habitats, specialised spacesuits, and even exploring the possibility of human reproduction on Mars.
Internal teams are reportedly working on architectural designs and addressing the medical and biological challenges of establishing a Martian colony.
