Mick Abel , a 23-year-old Phillies pitcher , did great in his MLB debut. He struck out nine batters, tying a team record for a debut, and threw fast pitches averaging 97.3 mph.
Mick Abel says he took a lot of reflections
Last year Mick Abel had to struggle during the season, but this season he improved in the minors. He filled in for injured Aaron Nola but will return to the minors soon. Meanwhile, Paul Skenes threw his first MLB complete game, allowing just three hits.
Mick Abel said, after the match:
"It's pretty cool, It's a lot more than I could have expected."
Abel said:
"It took a lot of reflection, it took a lot of understanding who I am as a person and as a man, I think the biggest thing is redefining what my version of success is, and how I can go out there and try to get 1% better every day."
Abel added:
"I want nothing more than to be back here, Everybody can say that being in the spot I am. I'm just taking what I can from today, what I did well, what I can do better, and how I can attack that going forward."
Meanwhile, Rafael Marchan, who caught Abel in Triple-A said:
"It's more attacking the hitter, first-pitch strikes. When he's ahead, he has really good stuff to get hitters out, and that's what he showed today."
Manager Rob Thomson said:
"He keeps throwing the ball like that, I guarantee he's going to be back."
