Devin Williams breaks his silence after being demoted by the Yankees Devin Williams performance had been going down south from the past few games and this what brought the pitcher under the scanner. Williams made headlines for all the wrong reasons recently. He was demoted from the position of a closer in the team roster by the New York Yankees. However, this move was not instant, as it came after going through his poor and below-average performance in the last ten games during the 2025 MLB season. After being demoted, Williams even reacted to the move, and he wasn’t surprised by it at all. He said-
"With the way things have gone recently, it's not really a shock to me. Being the closer is a position you have to earn, and you have to keep earning it to continue to be in that role. So lately, I haven't been doing that.”
While talking about being demoted, Williams even turned emotional and confessed-
"It's disappointing. You work for years to get to that point, and to have that taken away from you, it's not a fun feeling at all. But I can't say it's undeserved. Not necessarily confidence, as much as what we’re doing as a group. The sequencing and things like that, just cleaning that up a little bit.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone even addressed the media with respect to Devin Williams' removal from the roster in the middle of the 2025 season. During a recent press conference, Boone said-
“As I said to him, he’s still got everything to be great. This is a guy that is in the prime of his career, and he’s just going through it a little bit. And it happens. I tell our players all the time, you make a career at this long enough, and you’re going to face some challenging moments. You’re going to face some adversity along the way.”
Boone further elaborated-
“The good news for Devin is he has everything to get through this and come out better from the other side. That’s my expectation. Right now, it’s best for everyone to pull him out of that role and try to start building some good rhythm, confidence, and momentum. I fully expect him to be a central figure for us moving forward.”
Reportedly, after Devin Williams’ exit from the Yankees team roster, Luke Weaver would be taking over the role of a closer for the 2025 MLB season. Weaver was part of the team as a closer even during the postseason back in 2024 MLB season.
