The New York Yankees vs San Diego Padres was sure juicy as it involved player-umpire controversy and a few ejections. Fernando Tatis Jr gets ejected for the first time and the reason? A controversial statement was given by the Padres hitter to the home plate umpire. What did the Padres’ star hitter say that got him a career-first ejection? We have the juicy details here!
Fernando Tatis Jr got ejected over a funny commentAs the night was beginning to crawl and vision getting blurred, the umpires started to make mistakes again. Multiple wrong calls were made, and on top of the list was home plate umpire Adrian Johnson. One such wrong call made in the right inning led Fernando Tatis Jr to lose his cool on the field. No, he didn't create a scene on the field, he went to Johnson and whispered in his ears,
“You’re not invited to my birthday party anymore.”
What happened next was quite expected as Fernando was seen walking towards the dugout. Umpire Johnson ejected him on the basis of the comment, which seemed quite unfair to the Padres' players and fans.
Manager Mike Shildt takes a stand for Fernando Tatis Jr Though Fernando left the field with dignity, without creating any scene, it seems manager Mike Shildt did not take his ejection lightly, after all, Fernando had never been ejected before this.
He went to the field and had a very heated discussion with Adrian Johnson, which ultimately led to his ejection as well. This was Mike’s 14th ejection from the field as a skipper, and all the more memorable.
Another reason behind Shildt getting angry on the field was because the Padres team has the least number of ejections. Upon asking, he said,
“I don't have players that I manage that get ejected. I probably have the fewest amount of player ejections in my time managing. So our players play, they stay in the game and they're respectful to the umpires.”
Though the Padres won the match by 4-3, the wrong calls and ejections did make the match all the more entertaining. Besides, this is not the first time an umpire made wrong calls in the season. Several umpires have made wrong calls and errors throughout the season leading to fans, players, and managers getting frustrated by them.
