Send Push
A recent incident involving a hefty school admission fee has ignited widespread discussion and criticism on social media. The focus of the outrage is an exorbitant Rs 8,400 charge for a parents' orientation session, raising concerns about the commercialization of education. This issue has resonated with many, highlighting the increasing burden of educational expenses on families, and sparking debates about the affordability and accessibility of quality education. The viral post, originally shared by a medical professional, has fueled a larger conversation about the state of the education system and the need for reform.

ENT surgeon’s viral post on the fee

An ENT surgeon, deeply disturbed by the exorbitant cost, shared the image on X (formerly Twitter). He expressed his frustration, pointing out that parents willing to pay this amount for an orientation session would likely hesitate to spend even a fraction of it on a doctor’s consultation.

The surgeon’s post about the “Rs 8,400 parent orientation fee ” quickly went viral. Jagdish Chaturvedi, a surgeon who is also a stand-up comedian and entrepreneur, captioned the image with: “Rs 8,400 INR parent orientation fee!!! No parent would ever agree to pay even 20% of this for a doctor's consultation… I’m considering opening a school now.”

Social Media backlash against fee structure

As expected, the fee structure sparked widespread irritation. Many social media users expressed frustration, with some highlighting that education is turning into a profitable business. One user wrote: "We need a revolution in the education system. Can startups create an affordable, quality education structure?"

Another added, "It’s all about profit, nothing else!" A third commented on how people are being taken advantage of, stating, "People are willing to pay, and so they are looting. If there were no takers, they would reduce the fee." A fourth echoed the sentiment by saying, "Parents are willing to spend more on their children than on themselves, fueling the rise of expensive schools and coaching centres."

Original post from December 2023 sparks renewed debate on rising education costs

While the image is currently making rounds online, it wasn’t newly posted. It was originally shared in December 2023 with a sarcastic comment: "Now I understand why my father sent me to a government school," alongside the detailed breakdown of nursery and Junior KG fees for the 2024-25 batch.

The viral discussion has highlighted a growing public demand for reform in the education sector. With many calling for affordable education that still offers high-quality learning, the conversation continues to focus on how the rising cost of education is becoming inaccessible for many families.
