Guwahati: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has installed 135 CCTV cameras throughout the Guwahati railway station on Saturday to enhance passenger security at one of NFR's busiest stations.

The inauguration of these CCTV cameras and an escort mobilisation hall was conducted by RPF director general Manoj Yadava, with NFR general manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava in attendance.

The DG emphasised RPF's dedication to implementing contemporary security systems and infrastructure to meet the expanding requirements of Indian Railways and its passengers. He stressed the significance of technology and unified security measures in improving railway journey safety.

NFR public relations officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma stated that the Rs 1.3 crore camera system features artificial intelligence capabilities. The installation includes facial recognition technology for real-time identification, movement tracking and enhanced suspicious activity detection.

"These cameras, which have been strategically installed in the nooks and corners of the railway station, including on each platform. It will be monitored and controlled from a centralised control room. The AI-powered system is designed to raise alerts if it detects any suspicious behaviour, such as someone loitering in a particular area for more than five seconds. By analyzing facial patterns, the system can identify individuals and flag unusual activity, allowing authorities to respond swiftly and take necessary action," the PRO said.

Sharma noted that 20 panic buttons have been positioned near cameras across the station to assist distressed passengers. "There are twenty panic buttons which are strategically installed across various platform locations. In case of an emergency, the person can press the button to instantly alert the control room. The system then transmits the individual's image and location, enabling the control room staff to coordinate immediate assistance with on-ground security personnel," he added.

Additionally, he mentioned that the cameras feature an anti-tampering mechanism that identifies attempts to obstruct or damage them. Such incidents trigger immediate control room alerts, with the system capturing the final image of the person attempting interference.
