Guwahati: A fabricated poster promoting a non-existent Arijit Singh performance at Gauhati University (GU) on April 25 has triggered security concerns as the university prepares for its 32nd convocation. The high-profile event, where President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to attend as the chief guest, has led officials to emphasise the need for enhanced security measures following the spread of this deliberate misinformation. However, the origin of the false information is still unclear.
On Friday, the GU administration lodged an official complaint with Assam DGP Harmeet Singh regarding the circulation of the fake poster on social media. "Security measures are being implemented as per protocol at the convocation venue. We anticipate police action, as such disinformation demands serious attention," said GU registrar Utpal Sarma.
The university released an official notice advising all parties to obtain information solely through authorised university channels.
Sarma said, "The deliberate act of misinformation poses potential risks to public order and safety, particularly in light of our upcoming 32nd convocation, scheduled for 25 April 2025." Students reported receiving the fake poster via WhatsApp, but GU officials confirmed its contents were entirely false. Sarma stressed the need for heightened security measures, given the President's anticipated presence as the chief guest.
Prior to the complaint filing on Friday, state chief secretary Ravi Kota inspected the convocation venue on Thursday. Kota held detailed discussions with GU vice-chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta and other senior officials, including the Guwahati commissioner of police and IG security, reviewing preparations and assigning responsibilities to ensure a seamless and dignified event.
