Panaji: Mapusa’s historic Athaide Municipal Library, which remained shut for five years, will be opened to the public on April 23. Deputy speaker and Mapusa MLA Joshua De Souza confirmed that the library housed in the old municipal building – closed for renovation and restoration – will be finally thrown open this month.
He said urban development minister Vishwajit Rane will commission the library. A library official said the old facilities will continue, but there is more on offer, including a digital library.
New membership will be rolled out. As regards the continuity of the old members, the decision will be taken at the next meeting, she said.
The restoration and renovation were initially to be completed in less than a year, but it took several years to finish the job, drawing criticism from citizens.
The estimated cost of the renovation work is said to be Rs 3.8 crore.
