Traffic to Bengaluru hit as Hosur elevated flyover develops lateral shift

Krishnagiri: The Hosur elevated flyover on Bengaluru-Chennai National Highway on Saturday developed a lateral shift - a horizontal displacement of the road's centreline or the path of vehicles travelling on it - forcing officials to suspend all vehicular movement to Bengaluru through the structure.

Each day, more than 50,000 vehicles, including heavy trucks and buses, use the flyover, which was constructed close to Hosur bus stand 15 years ago.

When alerted, engineers attached to the National Highways Department, led by chief engineer Prasanna, carried out an inspection and found that the flyover was dangerous for traffic.

To manage traffic, all vehicles heading to Bengaluru via the flyover were redirected to the Hosur bus stand via a service road. Now, vehicles are diverted to Dharga Road through the bus stand before rejoining the National Highway. This diversion for a distance of two kilometres through the service road led to significant traffic congestion.

Prasanna said the lateral shift might have developed since a high number of container trucks were using the flyover. "The movement of vehicles on the flyover has been temporarily suspended. We have alerted higher authorities about the situation. Necessary repairs will be carried out after their inspection. Only after that, vehicles will be allowed on the flyover."
