Coimbatore: At least 738.82 kg of marijuana (ganja) that was seized from the Coimbatore police range, which comprises Coimbatore rural, Tirupur rural, and the Erode and the Nilgiris district police limits, was destroyed on Friday.
Police said the ganja was seized in connection with 395 cases in the Coimbatore police range in the past few years. "Now that the case trials are over and the peddlers are convicted, courts directed us to incinerate the seized ganja at a biomedical waste treatment facility at Chettipalayam," a police officer said.
He said a drug disposal committee, led by deputy inspector general (Coimbatore range) Sasimohan, was earlier formed for the purpose. The committee had nodal police officers in the rank of additional superintendents and deputy superintendents of police as its members.
"They took 738.82kg ganja to the biomedical waste treatment facility at Chettipalayam on the day and incinerated the same," the officer said.
