Ludhiana: Two men accused of shooting at civilians and stealing a motorbike near Dayalpura village in Punjab's Samrala area have been arrested, with one of them injured in a dramatic scuffle with police during a weapon recovery operation.
Satnam Singh and Gurkaranvir Singh, both 21, were apprehended by Khanna police on Monday for allegedly opening fire on April 9 and snatching a motorcycle from three men travelling near Dayalpura. One victim sustained a gunshot wound in the attack. The accused were initially unidentified, but a probe led to their arrest and the recovery of a country-made .315-bore pistol, three live cartridges and the stolen motorcycle.
During interrogation, Satnam disclosed the location of the weapon, prompting a recovery operation near an abandoned brick kiln off the Samrala highway. As police were preparing to return, Satnam allegedly shoved the local station house officer (SHO) and attempted to flee. In the scuffle, he seized the SHO's service weapon, which discharged, hitting Satnam in the left leg. Both the accused and the SHO were hospitalised with injuries.
Authorities have added charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for obstructing public servants and resisting lawful apprehension. Satnam Singh is also wanted in a separate case in Amritsar involving a home invasion and assault. Investigations continue into the source of the recovered weapon.
