Top 5 films coming to cinemas this August - including sequel no one saw coming

This month, along with the weather, cinema is heating up. Drama films are coming to the floor after what feels like a Marvel meets Superhero couple of months. One highly anticipated sequel prepares to hit our screens, more than 20 years on from its predecessor, along with a long-awaited crime thriller starring Sydney Sweeney, that first debuted in 2023.

Among this we have a crime comedy and a dramedy with Brits in the lead roles preparing to make waves in the cinematic universe. If you're looking for your next recomendation - these are the top five films I think you should go and see next month.

Weapons

August 8

From director Zach Cregger comes this thriller film that tells the story of a mass disappearance involving all but one child from the same class. The community are then left to figure out what is behind the tragic incident. The film stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich and Austin Abrams.

Freakier Friday

August 8

This is the sequel no one saw coming. As Jamie Lee Curtis and Linday Lohan reprise their roles for an even Freakier Friday film. The plot follows mother and daughter duo, Tess and Anna, 22 years on from their first identity crisis - but with two families once again coming together, the pair realise lightning may strike again. Nisha Ganatra directs.

Americana

August 15

This crime thriller originally debuted at South by Southwest in early 2023 but it is now finally coming to the big screen. Starring Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney and singer Halsey, the film tells the story of a shy waitress and a military veteran who find themselves tangled up with a ruthless criminal as they try to retrieve a rare Native American artifact. It has already received worldwide acclaim so will be worth checking this one out.

Caught Stealing

August 29

Starring Elvis actor Austin Butler and Batman actress Zoe Kravitz alongside former Doctor Who, Matt Smith, this crime meets comedy film follows a burned-out ex-baseball player who unexpectedly finds himself in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City. Darren Aronofsky directs.

The Roses

September 1

Starring British icons Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Coleman, this is a satirical black comedy directed by Jay Roach. It is adapted from the 1981 novel The War of the Roses by Warren Adler, and a remake of the film from 1989. The plot follows the seemingly picture-perfect couple Theo and Ivy who both have successful careers, a loving marriage and great kids. However, their hidden resentment and underlying feelings of competition soon come to the floor and cause chaos.
