The pretty seaside city home to gorgeous beaches where it's 20C in April

Greece is famous for its stunning islands, providing the ideal destination for holidays throughout the year. There are some 6,000 islands that belong to , but only 227 are inhabited.

The islands are one of the reasons people travel to , which welcomed 26 million visitors in 2024. Some of the most popular are Santorini, Corfu, Mykonos and , which is home to the breathtaking city of Chania. Located on the northwest coast of the , it's known for its 14th century Venetian harbour, narrow streets and waterfront restaurants.

At the harbour entrance is a 16th century lighthouse with Venetian, Egyptian and Ottoman influences.

Other notable architectural monuments include the St Nikolas Minaret, the Municipal Market and the Venetian Shipyards (Neoria).

Visits to religious temples such as the Metropolis Church, the Cathedral Temple of Holy Mary Assumption and the Jewish Synagogue are all worth the effort.

The town also has much to offer the more laid-back tourist, with beautiful beaches and world-class restaurants.

One of the best beaches is Falassarna, located about 50 kilometres west of , easily accessible by car and public transport.

To the south of Falassarna, the world-famous Elafonisi beach can be found and is about an hour and a half drive from the main city.

The beach features crystal clear waters and magical pink sand, and makes a perfect day out.

Farmers' markets take place several times a week in , and provide tourists with the opportunity to buy delicious local produce.

April is one of the best times to head to the island, with temperatures averaging a pleasant 20C.

Chania has received rave reviews on Tripadvisor, regularly scoring top marks from those who visited.
