Princess Kate is set for a "powerful evolution" as she has started to use her jewellery to communicate her identity "beyond public duty", a jewellery expert has said. The Princess of Wales, 43, stepped out for two public engagements on Thursday and was seen wearing a special necklace with the initials G, C and L on it - with each initial representing her three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
While the princess is believed to have had the necklace for some time, she has been seen wearing it more often recently, with one jewellery expert believing this is intentional. Speaking to Express.co.uk, Nilesh Rakholia of Abelini said the jewellery marks a "quiet but powerful evolution" for the princess, who by wearing such a jewellery item is showing that her main role "first and foremost" is as a mother.
It is also believed the jewellery choice gives her more "relatability that connects her to the public".
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Nilesh - jewellery expert and founder of Abelini - said: "What's striking about the Princess of Wales wearing her initial necklace more frequently now is that it represents a quiet but powerful evolution in how she uses jewellery to communicate.
"She's had the piece for years, but the timing of her wearing it more often speaks volumes - it's an intimate, personal jewel that symbolises her role first and foremost as a mother. Each initial is a subtle tribute to her children, grounding her identity beyond public duty.
"From a style perspective, initial jewellery has always carried a layer of sentimentality, but when someone in her position wears it, it resonates on a cultural level.
"It shows a shift towards modern royal jewellery - pieces that aren't purely ceremonial heirlooms but rather personal markers of love and family. It's this accessibility and relatability that connects her to the public. We're seeing a wider trend among clients who want jewellery that tells a personal story - whether through initials, birthstones or engravings."
Nilesh also believes that the princess opting to wear the necklace more acts as a reminder of "what matters most" to her.
She said: "The fact she's wearing it more now also suggests a broader move in her jewellery narrative: a balance between duty and individuality.
"In the same way Meghan has redefined protocol with her ring choices, Catherine is carving her own path - choosing pieces that are less about grandeur and more about intimacy.
"The beauty of initial jewellery is that while it's understated in form, it carries immense weight in meaning. For her, it's not just adornment, it's a daily reminder of what matters most."
