Learner drivers who have a disability, health condition or other difficulties could be eligible for extra support on their test.
The Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is encouraging drivers to seek as much assistance as they require to help ensure they succeed in their examination. The theory test, which assesses your hazard perception skills and understanding of road safety, can prove nerve-wracking for certain learner drivers.
This is made worse by the fact that candidates have a maximum of just 57 minutes to tackle the 50 multiple choice questions and approximately 20 minutes to complete the hazard perception section. Nevertheless, this can be made more accessible for some drivers through additional assistance.
Posting on X, the DVSA stated: "Ready to book your theory test? If you have a reading difficulty, disability or health condition, you can get support when you take your test. Just let us know when booking".
What assistance you can receive on your theory testA broad range of assistance could be offered during your theory test, depending on your requirements. For instance, if you struggle with reading you can request to hear the examination through headphones in either English or Welsh - this also enables you to listen to questions and possible answers as many times as necessary.
If you have difficulty reading
You may also be able to receive extra time on your test or have someone read what's on the screed and record your answers. You may also have someone reword questions for you to help you understand.
Keep in mind that if a staff member is required to reword your theory test questions, they will not change any technical language that you are required to know for the test. However, they can change the order of the sentence and non-technical words.
If you do have a test centre staff member read out instructions for you, they will either read out questions to you through headphones from another room while they can see your screen of have a member of staff sit near you in the test room.
If you are deaf or have hearing issues
In this situation, you can take the theory test in British Sign Language (BSL). When taking the test, a BSL video will appear on the screen next to the questions and answers.
Furthermore, you could have a BSL interpreter with you during the test.
Further details on the assistance you could receive when booking your theory test can be found on GOV.UK here.
