Journalist Carole Malone didn't hold back when reacting to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner's calls for flexible working hours during heatwaves. Appearing beside GB News host Andrew Pierce on the channel this morning, Malone explained Rayner is one of a select few ministers who want workers to "put down their tools" in a heatwave.
She fumed: "This is just outrageous. She wants people who work outside to be able to down tools and just stop working [when it's 27C]. It's nothing. This is like a skiver's charter. What happens when it's too cold or a bit windy, rainy or a bit dark? I mean, they finish at 3pm anyway, and how come the rest of Europe, which has temperatures way beyond here... They manage to work."
The debate comes after Rayner renewed calls she made to the Conservative Party in 2022 for employers to introduce effective heat control measures for workers.
During the heatwave of 2022, Rayner told the Tories to "issue urgent guidance" on safe indoor working temperatures and allow for flexible working.
Unions such as Unite pressed the Government to introduce a legal upper limit of 27C for manual roles.
Carole continued to fume, adding: "Can I just say, this is not a heatwave, I read one of the papers earlier saying we are in our fourth heatwave this year. No we are not! Go outside - there's big thick cloud. It's a bit warm."
"27C is not a terrible condition to work in," Carole continued. "We are in the middle of a productivity crisis in the country... It's not difficult to work in 27C."
Viewers took to X to share their thoughts about the GB News debate, and one said: "Pathetic, how did people manage years ago? Growing up in the 70's that temperature was normal."
Another stated: "This won't really affect people whose job involves sitting on their backside with air conditioning! Let's not forget about the manual jobs that don't have air conditioning, folks. It's people like them who do need a bit more flexible working."
A third shared: "Try working long hours in a factory with heat generating machinery, a furnace and no air conditioning."
