President Donald Trump landed via helicopter in Windsor Castle's grounds to be welcomed by Princess Kate and Prince William before shaking hands with King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Prince William could be heard saying, "This is my father," to Trump as they approached King Charles, as the monarch gestured with a small wave of his hand.
Moments after greeting each other, they all entered horse-drawn carriages to be taken to Windsor Castle in what was a huge spectacle aired on various news programmes, including BBC News. The BBC filmed as 1,300 service personnel and 120 horses paraded the grounds for the state visit. As the dramatic footage was aired live on BBC News, viewers took to X to issue the same complaint.
One viewer penned: "Why is #bbcnews fawning over Trump's visit?" A second remarked, "The BBC is a complete embarrassment. Obsequious doesn't come close. Paying court to Trump in this sycophantic way, complete with non-exhaustive analysis of his every move, really is sickening."
Another wrote: "What a ridiculous FARCE....too scared to go anywhere near the British people......who btw are paying for this absolute circus of vanity." Someone else asked: "Isn't it all a bit too much?"
Despite the backlash, other watchers were in awe of the procession, with one writing: "A full display of royal protocol, quite a magnificent welcome."
Another shared: "#BBCnews welcome to the UK, President Trump. Everyone on their best behaviour."
This is Trump's second state visit, and this time, it will last two days. He is being hosted by the King and Queen and staying in Windsor this evening with his wife.
His last state visit was in 2019, when he was hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II. No other American leader has previously been offered this honour twice.
