Uttarakhand Diwas, also known as Uttarakhand Foundation Day, is celebrated annually on November 9. This year marks the 24th anniversary of the formation of Uttarakhand, India's 27th state, which was officially created on this day in 2000. The state was carved out from the northern part of Uttar Pradesh, with Dehradun declared as its capital — a status it retains to this day.
The Journey to Statehood The creation of Uttarakhand was the result of a long and determined struggle by the people of the region. Various social and political organizations, including the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, led extensive movements advocating for a separate state. These efforts, marked by numerous protests and a strong sense of regional identity, culminated in Uttarakhand's official establishment on November 9, 2000. Initially named Uttaranchal, the state’s name was changed to Uttarakhand in 2007, reflecting a deeper connection to its cultural heritage and identity.
Significance of Uttarakhand Day Uttarakhand Diwas honors not only the establishment of the state but also the resilience and dedication of its people. After India’s independence from British rule, regions with shared cultural and historical ties were organized into various states. However, the Himalayan regions within the then United Province (now Uttar Pradesh) felt overlooked, and a call for statehood grew stronger.
The demand for a distinct state grew as the people of the region sought better governance and recognition of their unique identity. Uttarakhand Diwas serves as a reminder of this journey and celebrates the spirit and unity of its people.
