Kathmandu: Top leaders from Nepal's three major political parties, including Prime Minister and CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli, met today to discuss advancing the remaining tasks of the peace process. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, focused on completing the long-standing peace process.
Deputy General Secretary of CPN (Maoist Center), Shakti Bahadur Basnet, said the leaders agreed on appointing officials to the Transitional Justice (TJ) commissions who fully understand the principles of the peace process and the relevant legal provisions.
Basnet shared after the meeting, "A discussion was held on finalizing the recommendation committee within a few days. Once the committee is formed, officials will be appointed to the commission."
A recommendation committee, initially formed by the previous government, is tasked with constituting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Inquiry into Enforced Disappeared Persons.
The bill amending the laws governing both commissions was signed by the President on August 29, marking an important step towards their operationalization.
In addition to Prime Minister Oli, the meeting was attended by Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Deputy General Secretary of CPN (Maoist Centre) Basnet, and Attorney General Ramesh Badal.
