How does salt increase blood pressure?Consuming foods with high salt (sodium) can narrow your arteries and increase blood pressure. Salt is used to increase the shelf life of most foods these days. There are some foods that do not show salt but they contain plenty of it. Packaged foods, canned soups, frozen meals and processed meats are high in sodium. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), reducing sodium by 1,000 milligrams per day in the diet can have a positive effect on blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends a sodium intake of 1,500 milligrams per day for patients with high blood pressure.
Eat foods rich in potassium, blood pressure will remain normalPotassium balances the effect of sodium in the body. It helps in excreting sodium through urine. Potassium rich foods excrete sodium from the body through "urine". This mineral relaxes the walls of your blood vessels, which reduces BP. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that 3,500 to 5,000 milligrams of potassium should be consumed every day to control high blood pressure.
Eat these foods to increase potassium- If you want to eat potassium rich foods to control BP, then you should eat more fruits and vegetables. Include at least 4½ cups of fruits and vegetables in your diet every day.
- Include lentils, plums, bananas, kidney beans, orange juice, melon, squash, apricots, soybeans, raisins, potatoes, spinach, chicken breast, low-fat dairy products in your diet. All these foods are not only rich in potassium but also normalize blood pressure.
- To enhance the flavor of your food, add garlic, fresh herbs, and spices instead of salt.
- Avoid eating packaged foods. Do not eat out in restaurants.
- Pay attention to the "Daily Value (DV)" percentage of sodium in packaged foods. If a food has 5% or less of the DV of sodium, it is considered a low-sodium food. If the DV is 20% or more, it is considered a high-sodium food that you need to avoid.
