In today’s fast-paced world, more than half of the population is battling some form of health issue — from obesity and diabetes to heart problems. The root cause often lies in poor eating habits and an unhealthy lifestyle that deprives the body of essential nutrients. One of the visible signs of this internal imbalance can be varicose veins — swollen, twisted, or bluish veins usually seen on the legs.
If you frequently experience heaviness, swelling, or pain in your legs, you may be dealing with varicose veins. While modern medicine offers several treatments, Ayurveda has a natural and effective solution known as Potli Therapy — a traditional herbal compress treatment that can be easily done at home.
Recently, nutritionist Shweta Shah shared on Instagram how this ancient remedy can provide quick relief from nerve pain and swelling, without the need for medication. Here’s everything you need to know about how Potli Therapy works and how to prepare it yourself.
🌿 What Is Potli Therapy?Potli Therapy is an Ayurvedic healing method where a small pouch (or potli) filled with therapeutic herbs is heated and applied to the affected area. The warmth of the herbal compress helps improve blood circulation, reduces pain and inflammation, and relaxes stiff muscles.

According to Ayurvedic experts, the herbal heat penetrates deep into the skin, soothing the affected nerves and promoting faster healing. It’s a safe and natural way to manage discomfort caused by varicose veins, joint pain, or muscle stiffness.
💆♀️ Benefits of Potli TherapyThis simple-looking herbal pouch offers multiple health benefits when used regularly:
-
Enhances Blood Circulation: The warmth stimulates blood flow, helping oxygen and nutrients reach affected areas more efficiently.
-
Reduces Swelling and Inflammation: The herbs have natural anti-inflammatory properties that soothe irritated tissues.
-
Relieves Muscle Stiffness: Regular application eases cramps and relaxes tight muscles.
-
Calms Minor Skin Irritation: The herbal blend also helps reduce itchiness or burning sensations on the skin.
To make a Potli at home, you’ll need:
-
2 tsp ajwain (carom seeds)
-
1 tbsp methi dana (fenugreek seeds)
-
1 tbsp saunf (fennel seeds)
-
1 tbsp jeera (cumin seeds)
-
1 tsp arjun chaal (arjuna bark powder)
-
1 tsp black salt
-
1 tsp ashwagandha powder
-
5–6 neem leaves
-
A thin muslin or cotton cloth
Lightly dry roast all the herbs in a pan until they release a pleasant aroma.
Transfer them onto the muslin cloth.
Gather the edges and tie tightly to form a small pouch or potli.
Before using, gently heat the potli on a dry pan for about 15 seconds until it’s comfortably warm (not too hot).
Sit comfortably and elevate your legs slightly.
Apply the warm potli gently over the affected veins using light pressure.
Always massage from bottom to top — this helps blood flow back toward the heart.
Continue for about 10–15 minutes daily or every alternate day.
After the session, keep your legs elevated for another 10 minutes to enhance circulation.
This herbal Potli Therapy not only eases pain and swelling caused by varicose veins but also improves overall blood circulation and muscle health. With consistent use, it can help you feel lighter, more relaxed, and energized — all without the side effects of medication.
If you’ve been struggling with nerve or leg pain, this ancient Ayurvedic remedy might be the natural comfort your body has been waiting for.
