Sometimes, a player just needs the right opportunities to shine—and Mitchell Owen is proving exactly that. Despite being dropped by Punjab Kings after playing just one match in IPL 2025, Owen has turned into a match-winner in America’s Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025, smashing 17 sixes and winning consecutive matches for Washington Freedom.
Punjab Kings had signed Owen as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell for ₹3 crore, but he got limited chances and was dismissed for zero in his only IPL innings. Yet, Owen’s story is very different across the Atlantic, where he has been setting the MLC stage on fire.
Within just 24 hours, Owen became the hero for Washington Freedom twice. His latest game-winning innings came against Texas Super Kings, who set a challenging target of 221 runs, led by captain Faf du Plessis’s 69. Washington Freedom, chasing 221, needed a strong foundation—and Owen delivered with a blazing 89 runs off just 52 balls. Washington Freedom chased down the target with 7 wickets and 2 balls to spare.
This came a day after Owen’s explosive 60-run innings against Mumbai Indians New York, which had similarly powered Washington Freedom to victory.
With 245 runs so far in MLC 2025, Owen is currently second only to Finn Allen on the highest run-scorers list. His 17 towering sixes have made him a genuine crowd favorite and a vital player for his team’s success.
From being overlooked in IPL to becoming a star overseas, Mitchell Owen is showing that persistence and talent will always find a way to shine.
