Liam Gallagher's split with Patsy Kensit sparked horror Wembley gig that haunted band

Manchester rock duo Oasis are preparing to headline seven nights of gigs at Wembley Stadium - and it all kicks off this evening. It’s part of the Gallagher brothers reunion tour across the UK and Ireland and fans cannot wait.

But a Wembley gig 25 years ago in the year 2000 still haunts the rock icons with Noel Gallagher describing it as ‘dreadful’ at the time. It’s made music history as one of their most cringe gigs which both Noel and Liam Gallagher have regretted publicly.

As excitement builds for the Oasis’s 2025 reunion shows at Wembley Stadium, fans will be expecting something much more enjoyable as the indie brothers return to the same performance venue - and you may even be able to still bag yourself a ticket.

Tonight’s gig marks the first time Oasishas played the Wembley Stadium venue since July 2009. The gig came just weeks before Noel and Liam split.

But it was during the Standing on the Shoulder of Giants tour in 2000 that a slurred performance played out, of course now, the brothers are older and potentially wiser than they were 25 years ago.

Their second night at Wembley Stadium in July 2000 was being filmed for a live album as well as a TV broadcast, however it soon became a notorious mix up, with Noel later saying (in 2017) that his brother Liam should ‘hang his head in shame’ over what went down.

Frontman Liam Gallagher, appeared drunk at that time and was slurring lyrics, ranting expletives and talking about his personal life in between songs.

Speaking about the night in 2017, Noel Gallagher told Radio X he considered it a ‘low point in Oasis’.

He said: “It was a horrible two-and-a-half hours on stage. Liam can hang his head in shame. It was dreadful.”

Liam made slurred references to his relationship break up actress Patsy Kensit, at the time.

Liam and actress and model Patsy confirmed their divorce in September 2000 - ending three years of marriage. The couple had happier times and share son Lennon together. Their break-up was finalised in London Divorce Court, with a decree nisi granted to Kensit due to Gallagher's 'unreasonable behavioir. '

In more recent years, Liam has admitted he's stopped drinking before going on stage.

“I’ve not drank booze on stage since that famous Wembley gig. Remember that one where it all went a bit...” he shared on Radio X. “Apparently people like that kind of thing but now I steer clear of all of that, do you know what I mean? It’s just water man, stuff like that.”

But to this day, that uncut footage from 2000 is still widely available online.

The band’s Familiar to Millions release ended up eternalising the chaotic show - and vocals were edited to salvage the recordings.

Now, 25 years on, despite all this, Oasis fans have never lost love for the indie duo - and they are already queuing at the Wembley venue this afternoon anticipating tonight’s show.
