Children's remains found beneath property by builders working on home extension

Human remains found by builders carrying out luxury renovationson a UK home are thought to belong to children.

The "incredibly sad" discovery came after the workmen uncovered human bones buried deep in the cellar, before Crime Scene Investigators swept into the usually quiet Cleveland Road in Lytham, Lancashire. Lancashire Police now say they believe the bones may belong to children, with officers appealing for help in identifying the remains. The force said they are not treating the discovery as suspicious, as they believe they have come from a historic burial ground that once stood in the area, long before the rows of houses and nearby railway line were built.

The shocking discovery was made last week on August 15 where constrcution crews had been busy transforming the modest terraced house into a plush modern property complete with a cinema room and games lounge. All building work was immediately suspended while officers combed the area and began trying to piece together how the remains ended up beneath the property.

Blueprints filed in May show proposals for a lavish extension boasting a new basement living space, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom, plus the creation of entertainment spaces such as a dedicated cinema room.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "You may have heard about the discovery of some human remains found in Lytham last weekend. We know that this has caused quite a bit of discussion within the community, so we wanted to bring you an update.

"If you weren't already aware, we were contacted at 12:37pm on 15th August, with a report that some builders who had been completing work on a property in Cleveland Road, Lytham had found what they thought to be bones.

"Since then, the remains have been confirmed to be human, and our enquiries have led us to understand that they may be that of children and that this is an isolated historical burial. The remains have now been removed from the property, and enquiries will continue to attempt to identify who they are.

"We know that this has attracted attention from the local community, so it was important to us to provide this update today. If you have any information that could assist us in identifying them, please get in touch with us on 101 quoting log 0616 of 15th August."
