Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will visit Damoh on Monday to review the ongoing investigation into the Christian missionary hospital case, where an alleged fake doctor performed heart surgeries on over a dozen patients, leading to seven reported deaths.
The case came to light after a complaint was filed one-and-a-half months ago by advocate Deepak Tiwari, president of Damoh district’s child welfare committee. Tiwari alleged that a man named Narendra Yadav had been posing as a cardiologist under the false identity of Dr. N John Kem, a legitimate UK-based doctor, and conducting surgeries at the hospital.
Following the complaint, a probe committee was constituted by the district administration. However, despite the seriousness of charges, no arrests have been made so far.
Both the hospital head Dr Ajay Lal and the accused, Narendra Yadav, are believed to have fled the country.
Advocate Tiwari said that both Dr. Lal and Yadav were in continuous online contact with the hospital management—Dr. Lal at night and "Dr. John" during the day. “Soon after I filed the complaint, Dr. John fled abroad,” he said. The initial suspicion arose when a patient complained in February that the doctor was unable to make a proper diagnosis. Upon deeper inquiry, the accused disappeared.
Tiwari claimed that official documents confirmed Yadav had been impersonating Dr Kem, and the committee’s investigation has so far linked seven deaths to the alleged fake treatment.
Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr. Mukesh Jain confirmed that investigations are still ongoing. “A review meeting is being held under the chairmanship of Collector Sudhir Kocher. No arrest has been made yet as the accused fled more than a month ago,” he told Free Press.
