Very heavy overnight showers brought Kolkata to a standstill on Tuesday, leaving several areas waterlogged and disrupting road and air travel.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more downpour in the coming days due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
Flights hit, airlines caution passengers
With many parts of the city submerged and traffic paralysed, airlines have asked passengers to plan their travel with caution. Low-lying areas such as Garia Kamdahari, Jodhpur Park, Kalighat and Ballygunge recorded over 250 mm of rain, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation said.
SpiceJet posted on X: “#WeatherUpdate: Due to bad weather in Kolkata (CCU), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may be affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status via http://spicejet.com/#status.”

IndiGo also issued a travel advisory and has asked passengers to check status of the flights. “Some routes across Kolkata have been impacted by heavy rain, leading to temporary blocks or diversions. We recommend planning your journey accordingly, and leave with a bit of extra time in hand. Please keep a tab on your flight status via our app or website before heading out. Our teams are working proactively to reduce any inconvenience and help you on your way. Thank you for your patience. We are here with you, every step of the way.”
Akasa Air had also issued a travel advisory last night. "Due to heavy rainfall in certain parts of Mumbai, Kolkata, and Pune, we anticipate slow moving traffic and congestion on roads leading to the airport. To ensure a seamless travel experience, we request you to plan for additional travel time to reach the airport well in time for your flight. More rain likely in South Bengal
According to the IMD, the low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal may intensify, bringing widespread rain with isolated heavy to very heavy spells in Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Jhargram and Bankura till Wednesday.
Another fresh system is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal by September 25, raising the risk of prolonged disruptions.
