Star India opener Smriti Mandhana broke another long-standing India record during her innings of 45 runs in the final of the Women's World Cup against South Africa at the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday.
During her innings that was laced with eight fours, Mandhana went past legend Mithali Raj to score the most runs by an Indian in a single edition of a World Cup. The former Indian captain had 409 runs in the 2017 World Cup, while the vice-captain now has 434 runs in nine innings at an average of 54.25 and an impressive strike rate of 99.08. Her highest score stands at 109.
The opener also came close to cross another record, but failed to become the only third Indian batter to complete 1,000 runs in Women’s ODI World Cups. At the moment, only skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Raj are in that elite list among Indians.
India got off to an impressive start, adding 104 runs for the first wicket with Shafali Verma, who went on to score a half-century in only 49 balls.
Mandhana however, fell on the fourth delivery of the 18th over, facing Chloe Tryon, after edging a cut shot to wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta.
