Five-time champions became the first team to be eliminated from IPL 2025 after a dismal show in the season. CSK's elimination was set in stone after they lost eight of their first ten matches in the tournament and any practical hopes of making the last four were also wiped off a couple of games ago.
At the time of writing, CSK have lost nine matches out of eleven and are firmly lodged at tenth place on the points table in the ten-team tournament. In 2025 particularly, CSK plummeted to depths no one would have imagined. In this article, we will look at seven shocking stats that define CSK's plight.
First losses after agesSix of CSK's 11 matches so far have played at their foretress at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. But in 2025, this foretress and its generals were brought to their knees.
In their second game of the season, CSK comprehensively went down to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Chennai. The last time had emerged victorious against CSK in Chennai was all the way back in 2008.
Two matches later, Delhi Capitals handed CSK a loss in Chennai. That was the first time DC had beat CSK in Chennai since 2010.
Down the line, Sunrisers Hyderabad too joined the party in defeating CSK in Chennai. It was the first time ever that the "Orange Army" had breached Chepauk.
Most home losses in a seasonAs mentioned above, CSK's plight rises mainly from their inability to find success at home. CSK have played six home games out of a scheduled seven and lost five of those. Never before have CSK lost as many as five matches at home in a single IPL season.
And only once before - in the inaugural 2008 season - did CSK lose four home matches. CSK would hope that they can walk away with a win in their last home game, against on May 12 to avoid being part of a select dubious club.
The only team to lose all their home games in an IPL season were Deccan Chargers in 2008. There have also been as many as eight instances of teams losing six out of seven home matches in the league stage of an IPL season. When teams played eight home matches in 2012 and 2013, Pune Warriors lost six out of eight.
Eliminated for the first time from consecutive seasonsUntil 2019, CSK made it to the playoffs in every season that they had been a part of. In 2020, they were eliminated in the league stage for the first time ever.
Since then, CSK followed a bizzare alternating pattern where they would be eliminated in the group stages in even years (2020, '22, '24) and become champions in odd years (2021, '23). In 2025, the pattern did not hold as CSK have been eliminated in the group stages in two consecutive IPL seasons for the first time ever.
The first-ever season doubleFans of CSK and RCB have built a hyped rivalry over the years. However, CSK have dominated the on-field head-to-head, emerging victorious more often than RCB whenever these two teams faced each other.
In 2025, RCB beat CSK in Chennai. When the Yellove Army reached Bengaluru in hopes of returning the favour, they were thwarted again. This was the first time RCB did a double on CSK.
In 2025, CSK also suffered a season double at the hands of PBKS, but it was Punjab's fourth season double over them. and RR have already beaten CSK once this season and are slated to face them again.
If KKR can pull of another win, it would also be the 2024 champions' first season double over CSK. As for RR, they have done the season double over CSK thrice before.
Highest loss margins at homeWhen RCB beat CSK in Chennai, it was by a massive margin of fifty runs. CSK had never lost by such a margin at Chennai in the IPL. Their previous biggest loss at home was by 46 runs against in 2019.
Then, KKR's spinners spun such a dangerous web around CSK that they were consigned to just 103/9 in their alloted 20 overs. This was CSK's lowest total in the IPL in Chennai, the previous being 109 all out against MI in 2019.
Bowled out at home after 6 yearsBefore 2025, only twice had CSK been bowled out in an IPL match in Chennai in the tournament's history. Both instances had come against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians - in 2012 and 2019. They have matched the number in 2025 alone as and PBKS dismissed all 10 wickets during their victories at the Chepuak this year.
CSK's highest losing streak everAfter winning their first game (against MI in Chennai) in 2025, CSK went through five consecutive losses before registering their second win (against in Lucknow). This was the first time that CSK lost as many on the trot.
CSK had lost four in a row in 2010, the season where they scripted a miraculous comeback to emerge champions. They also lost four in 2022 - when they finished ninth - alongwith another streak that started in 2022 and ended in 2023. CSK lost each of their last three matches in 2022 and proceded to lose the season opener in 2023.
CSK are currently on a second losing spree this season that has extended to four matches. If they lose a fifth, they will become the third team - after Deccan Chargers in 2012 and Delhi Capitals in 2013 - to embark on two five-match losing streaks in a single IPL season.
