Formula 1: Oscar Piastri wins Bahrain GP, closes championship gap to three points

Send Push
Oscar Piastri delivered a dominant drive to take his second win of the 2025 Formula 1 season at the Bahrain Grand Prix, marking a major milestone in his 50th career race. The 24-year-old Australian not only bagged a vital victory in the title race but also made history by securing McLaren ’s first-ever win at the Bahrain International Circuit.

Starting from pole, Piastri immediately found himself under pressure from George Russell into the first corner. The Mercedes driver locked up but couldn’t dislodge the McLaren star, who held his ground and took control of the race. Even a mid-race Safety Car, which threatened to shake up the order, couldn’t rattle Piastri’s rhythm. He nailed the restart and steadily extended his lead, eventually cruising across the line 15.5 seconds clear of Russell.

While Piastri led from the front with clinical composure, teammate Lando Norris had a more challenging outing. The Briton was handed a five-second penalty for being out of position on the grid, but mounted an impressive comeback. In the final laps, he closed in on Charles Leclerc, overtook the Ferrari, and launched a late charge on Russell. He finished just 0.774 seconds behind the Mercedes to secure third place and limit the damage in the Drivers’ standings .

Leclerc, who had been battling Norris late into the race, had to settle for fourth, followed closely by his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton in fifth. Max Verstappen had a troubled evening, enduring a double pit stop delay and an overheating car. At one stage, the reigning world champion was last, but he clawed his way back to finish sixth after a late move on Pierre Gasly.

Alpine enjoyed its strongest weekend of the season so far, with Gasly holding on to seventh and Esteban Ocon finishing eighth. Yuki Tsunoda scored his first points since joining Red Bull, coming home ninth. Youngster Oliver Bearman rounded off the top ten with a gritty drive for Haas, picking up a well-earned point.

Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli narrowly missed out on his maiden points in 11th, while Fernando Alonso’s evening was forgettable as he crossed the line 16th. Carlos Sainz was the race’s only retirement after contact with Tsunoda ended his run prematurely.

With this win, Piastri narrows the gap to Norris at the top of the championship to just three points. As McLaren celebrates a landmark victory, the title battle is heating up fast heading into the next round. (Inputs from IANS).
