Deven Young's Facebook post after Murder raises questions

Seventeen-year-old Deven Young of Frankfort, Maine, has been charged with murder in the death of 48-year-old Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart. Stewart went missing on July 2 after going paddleboarding alone at Crawford Pond in Union. Her body was found in the early hours of July 3 on an island under “unusual circumstances.” The Maine Office of Chief Medical Examiner later confirmed that she died from strangulation and blunt force trauma.

Young was arrested on July 10, one week after the incident, and is currently being held at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 22.

Facebook post after the crime draws public attention

What has caught public attention is Young’s social media activity following Stewart’s death. On July 12 — ten days after the incident — Young reshared a photo originally taken by someone else. When someone commented asking how he was doing, Young replied, “doing well.”

This Facebook post, made just two days after Stewart’s body was found and two days before his arrest, is now raising questions as investigators continue to look into the motive. The comment thread has since become a focus point among those following the case.

Investigators still searching for motive

Police say Young had recently been staying with his family at the Mic Mac Family Campground in Union — the same location where Stewart was a seasonal camper. While authorities have not yet disclosed the nature of their relationship or the motive behind the crime, court documents confirm that Young is charged with “intentionally or knowingly” causing Stewart’s death.

At present, it is unclear if he will be tried as an adult. Young turns 18 in September.

Remembering Sunny Stewart

Sunny Stewart was known to friends and her community as an adventurous, independent woman. She had worked as a fisherman, carpenter, bartender, and boat captain. Friends described her as a fearless personality who thrived in the outdoors and often taught paddleboarding.

“She was the glue of our group,” said longtime friend Bethany Leach Parmley, who recalled Stewart’s loyalty and spirited energy. A GoFundMe page has been set up in her memory as loved ones plan a memorial.

With a suspect in custody and social media posts under scrutiny, investigators continue to piece together what led to Sunny Stewart’s death.
