Arsenal were unlucky not to get the desired result that they worked extremely hard for at home to Liverpool. Going into the game as underdogs, the performance deserved more.

An Arsenal legend was at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday to watch on after doing a lot of signing of a Collectible Note. You heard that right, currency emblazoned with the Iceman on it.

He spoke to pre-match media inside the stadium like plenty of former players, but few get the reception the Dutchman received. Considered by many to be the best player to have ever played for the club, even ahead of Thierry Henry, Bergkamp remains warm in the hearts by many.

From the questioning, it appeared as though perhaps he’d made a joke that those inside the ground might not remember. Well, they certainly did.

Arteta shouts at Partey

Before kick-off, there were a lot of question marks about whether Thomas Partey was the right choice to play in the right back role. There were options with Jurrien Timber and Ben White available and other defenders also with a chance of being called up.

Yet Partey, particularly in the first half would prove those critics wrong with a very good performance. Defensively astute and his progression was also excellent.

The job in the second half on three players out of their natural role, Partey, Ben White and Jurrien Timber, would need to be monumental. They were and much thanks to direction from Mikel Arteta.

Arteta was in constant communication with his makeshift right-back, shouting instructions from the sidelines. Of note he wanted him to bring the ball more centrally, and invert, which he did excellently.

Differing reactions

In the second half, Jurrien Timber went down, clearly having completed as many minutes as his body was able to give him. Arsenal were under pressure and in possession when they decided to kick the ball out.

Slot was booked for his complaints, while as play resumed, Liverpool were minded to give the ball back but Trent Alexander-Arnold instead threw it back to Ibrahima Konate who decided to do the right thing and kick the ball to David Raya.

Alexander-Arnold was incensed and scolded his teammate for it. Meanwhile, it was Myles Lewis-Skelly, not Oleksandr Zinchenko, who Mikel Arteta decided to bring on in place of the Dutchman.

As the teenager ran toward the bench, Zinchenko was seen applauding and shouting words of encouragement to his teammate. How fit the Ukrainian is, or whether Arteta believes the Hale End graduate is the right choice, the comradery was great to see.
