Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal transfer latest - agent's agreement, £60m fee, Mikel Arteta choice

Send Push

Arsenal continue to be linked with a number of big name transfers as the Gunners close in on their first signing of the summer. Martin Zubimendi is on course to complete his move to north London from Real Sociedad with Andrea Berta set to turn his attention to attacking reinforcements in the weeks ahead.

Mikel Arteta's side have been linked with a number of high profile strikers in recent months, with Newcastle United's Alexander Isak the club's dream target, while Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres have also been tipped for a move to the Emirates Stadium.

However, it's the latter of that trio that new sporting director Berta is said to be a huge fan of. The Swedish striker is one of the most sought after forward's in Europe this summer after a stellar campaign with Sporting CP.

With that in mind, football.london has taken a look at the latest Gyokeres transfer news and rumours.

'Dream' transfer scenario and Sporting disagreement

Portuguese media outlet Record claim Viktor Gyokeres will wait "until the end to see his dream of playing for Arsenal become reality."

The Swedish striker is still on holiday but believes patience will be key in landing a move to north London this summer with Arteta's side looking to bolster their forward line.

Reports surfaced earlier this month claiming that Gyokeres was unhappy with a supposed gentleman's agreement not being honoured, with former Sporting CP sporting director Hugo Viana said to have agreed to sanction a departure for bids in the region of £51.25m plus a further £8.55m in add ons.

The report claims Gyokeres' agent Hasan Çetinkaya has proof of an agreement, following a meeting held last year.

It adds that although there is interest from other clubs, Arsenal are Gyokeres' preferred destination, though the two parties have not had contact for over a week.

Sporting president hits out at 'gentleman's agreement' claims

Sporting president Frederico Varandas hit back at claims that the Portuguese club would sell the Swedish striker for a reported fee of £60m all in, but would sell for less than the reported release clause.

"It was agreed that Sporting would not demand the release clause at the end of the following season, especially because he was going to be 27," Varandas told Record. "Then, we knew Viktor's dream of going to a club where he could fight for the Champions League, and we have common sense.

"We guaranteed that we would not demand 100 million (£85m). In that meeting, the agent wanted to anchor the departure to a value, he spoke of 60 million (£51m), 70 million (£59.7m)... And I said: 'There's no point in setting a value,' because I don't know what will happen here in a year, if he gets injured, if he has a disappointing season..

"From then on, I never spoke to the agent again, I never spoke to the player about departures and values. Ten months have passed, and I see the agent in the press spouting information here and there, but Sporting has common sense, it keeps its word.

"The president of Sporting said that the club would not demand the clause and that we would adjust the value to Viktor's performance; he was one of the best players ever to step on the pitch in Portugal."

football.london understands that Arsenal are long-term admirers of the Swedish striker, with interest dating back to his spell at Coventry City in the Championship. Andrea Berta is thought to be a 'big fan' of Gyokeres, but, as it stands, there has been no official approach or offer made.
