Pivotal Eze transfer, cup success, Champions League verdict - Tottenham season predictions

Send Push

Tottenham are gearing up for a new campaign after a summer of overhaul in north London.

Spurs are fresh off the back of a season that finally saw them end their trophy drought, beating Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao. While the cup was celebrated fully with a parade and happy scenes outside the club's stadium, the joy was short-lived as Ange Postecoglou was dismissed as head-coach.

With Thomas Frank selected as his replacement, the club are ready for the start of the new Premier League season but suffered heartbreak in midweek as they fell to a penalty shootout defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup.

A host of new faces have been added to the squad, but they've also lost captain Son Heung-min, who left for Los Angeles, while James Maddison looks set to miss a large portion of the season after undergoing surgery on a knee injury.

How will this season unfold for Spurs? Our football.london writers decide below...

There were so many Tottenham positives to take from the Super Cup final and that has left supporters feeling very optimistic ahead of the new season. Last season's finish of 17th was unacceptable and Tottenham should climb the league table with Thomas Frank now the man in charge.

A top-four finish may be a bit too much considering how the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea have strengthened ahead of the new term. I expect Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest to drop off a bit from last season and that could open the door for Spurs to really challenge for fifth.

The appointment of Frank as boss should play into Dominic Solanke's hands and his numbers in front of goal could increase as a result. Pape Matar Sarr looks like he may also have a big role to play under the Dane and he could quite easily push for the club's young player of the season award if his pre-season performances are a sign of what's to come.

Joao Palhinha appears to be a very shrewd acquisition in the transfer market, especially if he can reproduce his Fulham performances on a consistent basis, and he could be the answer to the club's troublesome No.6 issue. He may turn out to be Tottenham's best signing of the summer and a contender for their player of the year if he excels.

The hope will be that Spurs can follow up their Europa League success last May but that may be a tall order. The FA Cup and Carabao Cup will represent their best chance of winning a trophy, although the top-four teams will be keen to triumph in those two competitions given the need to win a trophy when it could be oh so close in the Premier League and Champions League.

I think Thomas Frank could enjoy some success at Tottenham. But after the Europa League win under Ange Postecoglou last campaign, what is success?

Challenging for the Champions League places will be a start. At a minimum Tottenham must qualify for the Europa League. There are some big teams with decent squads at the top end of the Premier League now and it won't be easy for Spurs. Speaking about the Champions League, the Lilywhites must try and get out of the league phase of the competition. Anything past the round of 16 stage would be acceptable, but with a bit of luck they could go on a run. Their tails will be up following the Europa League triumph after all.

I think the Carabao Cup and FA Cup present Frank with an ideal opportunity for silverware and that could help the new head coach win the fans over. The last thing the Dane wants is Spurs going out in the early rounds...

Mohammed Kudus could be some signing for the north Londoners but I'm backing the club to bring in Eberechi Eze before the summer window closes. If the winger does join, it could really transform this Spurs side and be one of the signings of the summer. One current player who could benefit from Frank is Dominic Solanke. The former Bournemouth man is a real physical presence up top and if he stays fit I'm backing the Englishman to score around 20 goals.

Off the pitch, Yves Bissouma really needs to be moved on while the club really need to try and tie down Rodrigo Bentancur to a new deal. The midfielder's current contract expires next summer and he could be a key player in the years ahead if he commits his future.

I don't think anyone would have predicted Tottenham's 2024/25 campaign. Finishing 17th in the Premier League but winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League was extraordinary.

This season has got to be better, in the Premier League at least. After all, I'm not expecting Spurs to go on and win the Champions League this year! Getting to the knockout stages of the Champions League, however, is a viable expectation and something Spurs should definitely be aiming for.

I think the top four teams are far and away ahead of everyone else in the Premier League this season. Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea have all spent well and look to have really strong squads. Fifth should be the aim for Tottenham and, depending on English sides' performances in Europe, that could be enough for Champions League again.

It would be nice to win a trophy again, although you would think the main priorities will be the league and Europe. Carabao Cup is not so far-fetched and it would be nice to lift that or the FA Cup. I think one is definitely possible and I am going to stick my neck out and say Spurs will win the Carabao Cup.

Eberechi Eze needs to sign. I'm less bothered about Savinho, but we need a No.10 and if Johan Lange can sign one or two surprises for Frank before deadline day, the squad would look good, because right now it's a bit short.

It's such a strange start to a new campaign for Spurs. There should be a high after winning the Europa League, but it has undoubtedly been muted following the departures of Ange Postecoglou and Son Heung-min.

There absolutely has to be an improvement in the Premier League, and I think there will be; but I'm not sure they'll finish in the top four while competing in the Champions League and trying to adjust to a new style of play under Thomas Frank.

Cup competitions are the best bet, and I do think Spurs could be in with a chance of lifting a domestic trophy. The belief will be there after winning the Europa League.

If Spurs manage to sign Ebere Eze before the end of the window, he'll undoubtedly be the top new arrival for me, but if not then Joao Palhinha takes that plaudit, and could be a sensational bit of business on loan.
