Moises Caicedo leaves Chelsea icon red-faced after 'not very good' blast

Ex-Chelsea winger Pat Nevin has been left red-faced after his assessment of Moises Caicedo before Wednesday's 5-1 win over Ajax in the Champions League.

The Eredivisie outfit were left a man short early in the game when Kenneth Taylor was given his marching orders for a reckless challenge on Facundo Buonanotte. The Blues did not waste any time capitalising on their numerical advantage, with Marc Guiu finding the back of the net from close quarters at the Shed End.

Chelsea's victory was then sealed with goals from Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Estevao Willian and Tyrique George - ensuring an easy three points for the west London giants. Their only disappointment came when Wout Weghorst converted a penalty, handed to him on a plate by a needless foul from Tosin Adarabioyo.

And Nevin's pre-match comments on Caicedo turned out to be wrong - as he made another key impact, too. The Scotsman questioned the predicted use of Chelsea's Ecuadorian midfielder at full-back before kick-off.

"There are Chelsea fans out there who don't have a clue what is going on [with their team selections]," he said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Tonight we expect [Moises] Caicedo - who many people have suggested is the best midfielder in the league - to play at right full-back. I have watched him play there a number of times, and he is not very good at it.

"They are sticking payers in strange places. I still wouldn't be surprised if they won tonight, but it is hard to follow sometimes."

Caicedo has been a standout performer for the Blues so far this season and has received several plaudits for his performances. It's no surprise then that he's one of the very first names on the team sheet for Enzo Maresca this season. He has played almost every minute available in both the Premier League andChampions League.

Caicedo's top performances in blue come despite him being separated from his closest friend this summer. When asked who his best friend at Chelsea was, he told : “It was Nicolas Jackson, who has left the team.

"I was with him everywhere. I went to his house, he came to mine, and we played PlayStation, I always beat him (laughs). I have a very good relationship with him."

Jackson completed a deadline-day move to Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window. The striker joined the German giants on a loan deal - with an obligation to buy. That means his future is likely to be away from Stamford Bridge, even at the end of the loan agreement.
