Chelsea secure lucrative windfall from Marc Guehi to Liverpool transfer in deadline day blitz

Chelsea are set to bank millions from Marc Guehi's deadline-day transfer to Liverpool. The Crystal Palace captain was heavily linked with a move to Anfield - for much of the summer - as the Premier League champions aimed to bolster their backline.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool have now agreed a £35m deal with the Eagles for Guehi, who's currently undergoing a medical. The report claims the England international, who earned his stripes at Cobham, will sign a five-year contract in Merseyside.

It's said that the Reds held talks with Crystal Palace earlier this month, but no agreement was reached. The two clubs reportedly share a 'healthy relationship', which led to 'cordial talks' over a deal for Guehi ahead of Monday night's impending deadline.

If Liverpool can secure the 25-year-old defender's signature, the south London outfit will owe Chelsea a seven-figure sum. According to The Times, when the Blues sold Guehi to Crystal Palace for £18m in July 2021, they inserted a 20 per cent profit sell-on clause into his contract.

Assuming that the Eagles will make a £17m profit on the fee they paid four years ago, Chelsea will earn £3.4m. The proceeds from the clause will fund the loan fee that the Blues have paid Brighton to sign Facundo Buonanotte on a season-long agreement.

football.london understands that there's no option or obligation to buy clause in the 20-year-old attacking midfielder's deal. Speaking to the official club website upon his unveiling, Buonanotte said: "I'm very happy to join Chelsea.

"It's a great opportunity for me and I'm just looking to add as much to the squad as possible, help the team and help the staff," added the Argentina international. "It's a great step in my career.

"I'm really happy to be here and ready to offer as much as I can to the team and the staff.

"I'm sure that it will be a positive season. Of course, I'll get an opportunity to play in the Champions League for the first time, which will be a great challenge. I'm really looking forward to this season and hopefully I can help the club to achieve its goals."

On leaving Rosario, Argentina, in January 2023 to join the Seagulls, Buonanotte said: "It was a bit of a shock when I first moved to the UK. It was difficult moving at the start.

"It was a different culture, a different language and different weather.

"I remember landing here, and at 5pm it was all dark, places were closed, and when I wanted to get a coffee after training, I had no idea where to go. It's a very different culture here.

"Thankfully, when I joined Brighton, there were a lot of South American players and Spanish-speaking staff, and they helped me to settle and to know what I needed to do. I'm very grateful for their help.

"I've been in the UK for three years now, so I'm really happy. I like English football, I'm very happy to be here, I'm really settled and ready for this next challenge."

The new Chelsea signing went on: "It's very different from football in Argentina. You have to be prepared mentally and physically, especially because the football here is very intense. It's something I've had to work on a lot, but I've adapted, I'm progressing."
